Welcome to the MAS 2020 Summer Solo Songwriting Challenge
We've completed the summer co-writing challenge, and now it's time to do a little solo writing.
Here's How the Challenge Works.
- Register using the form below before the posted deadline: 11:59 PM CDT Thursday, August 20,2020.
- Wait for your prompt to be e-mailed to you after the registration period is over.
- When you get your prompt, start writing.
- Submit your song anytime within the next 30-days.
- We'll post your song up on our website right with all the other submissions.
You’ll find out exactly what the prompt is and what you'll be writing about on August 21, 2020.
But hey, we’ve got to get you registered…
The deadline to register is 11:59 PM Thursday, August 20, 2020.
To sweeten the deal, when you register, you'll get an incredibly insightful MAS Craft Workshop session absolutely FREE to keep, just for participating in the challenge.
You'll get 90-minutes of in dept instruction by MAS's Education Director and Berklee College of Music Certified Songwriter, Chad Shank.
Go ahead and Register Now!
Disregard all references to co-writers on the form. Just fill in your individual information and send it, so we know you are in.
Here’s how it works.
I know you're excited to find out your prompt and get writing. But the writing won't start until Friday, August 21, we want everyone to get a chance to register.
When the registration deadline is over, we’ll send you an e-mail with your writing prompt, a reminder of the challenge deadline, and of course your FREE 90-minute craft workshop download.
You’ll get a whopping 30-days to write the song.
It's not a race.
It’s not a contest.
It's not who can write the most tricked out multi-track song.
It’s simply a fun challenge for you to write a song the same time as your fellow MAS songwriters.
Instrument-vocal, or a cappella vocal tracks are welcome.
Submitting your song.
When you get your prompt e-mail containing your free craft download, you'll also get a link to the submission form…
You may submit your song anytime after you get your prompt on August 21 and before the deadline 11:59 PM Sunday, September 20, 2020.
When time is up, and we have a chance to post all the songs entered, we’ll show you where to listen to them and announce it to the world.
You'll be able to hear what your fellow MAS members wrote, using the same information you got.
It’s always fun to see how different writers approach one idea and put it in their own style.
Some questions you may have are
What are the rules?
This is a very relaxed challenge. No hard rules other than registration and completion deadlines, using the prompt we send you, and keeping it family friendly.
Write any genre you like. Any structure you like. As long or short as you like (but advisable to keep within normal length guidelines).
This is a great opportunity to put some MAS education topics to good use.
Can I co-write with someone?
We offer a quarterly co-writing challenge, If you only co-write that would be the challenge to enter.
Or, you could rise up and accept the challenge to write a song solo.
While we have no way of knowing whether you decided to get help writing your song, we are taking you on your honor it is a solo write upon submission.
Does MAS have any copyright ownership to my song?
MAS has nothing to do with the song other than publish a link to it on our website. You own the song’s copyrights. We may ask for your permission to let us post it on our YouTube channel and other MAS affiliated public media outlets.
Does our song need to be professionally recorded, mixed in a studio, recorded with multi-instrument tracks and etc.?
Not at all. An instrument-vocal or a cappella vocal track is perfectly fine. This is about songwriting, not creating a commercial track.
That said, you can dress it up however you’d like. It’s your song.
Can we write about anything we want?
You’ll get a topic or a prompt to use to start writing. Part of the fun for everyone participating is seeing how each song differs but still about the same topic or prompt.
Also remember, this is a family friendly event… subject matter… matters. MAS has the right to exclude any song submission deemed inappropriate.
If you have any other questions, just send us an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We look forward to seeing your song!
