January 2022 Solo Songwriting Challenge Results

Congratulations to all the Solo Songwriting Challenge Participants!

What was the challenge?

This month we encouraged our participants to "steal" something. Not actually steal, of course, but to find elements of other songs they could borrow in order to broaden their own techniques and styles. Then, take that element and use it as a starting point to write something of their own. Specifically, they were asked to look for:

  • Tempo
  • Rhyme scheme
  • Chord progression
  • Structure
  • Topics

Check out what they wrote!

Lyrics sheet:

Don’t Need Me Anymore

You use to come around
And spend some time alone with me
But some how you have changed
It’s just not the same, you see

So you think you don’t need me anymore
Just remember I’ll always open up my door

You use to listen to me
You’d sit and sing a song of praise
But now you’re on your own
You have left me alone you say

So you think you don’t need me anymore
Just remember I’ll always open up my door

Open up your eyes
The darkness tells you lies
Can’t you realizes
The truth in me

I gave up all I had
To free you from the bad
How can you turn away
From me, from me

Sarah Josepha Hale, she had a poet’s mind
With an air of dignity, she never was unkind
Perfect prose and poetry is how she made her way
What drove her to such destiny I really couldn’t say

“Mary’s lamb” and other poems came early in her life
She married young, had children, became a widowed wife
Even with adversity she seemed to make her way
She held on to those memories by wearing black each day

Driven by a mission to do the best she can
Sarah was the sturdy oak resilient to the end
She always had a lofty goal and a selfless plan
Sarah was a driving force with paper and a pen

“There is no impossibility, of him who stands prepared
to conquer every hazard” The fearful are the failing”
Sarah Josepha Hale

Driven by a mission to do the best she can
Sarah was the sturdy oak resilient to the end
She always had a lofty goal and a selfless plan
Sarah was a driving force with paper and a pen

Aging Naturally

Gettin old is where I’m headed
I’m headed for the ground
Even cars and truck will rust
And buildings fall down
Everything is headed
Headed for decay
Everything is slowly dyin
Every single day

Birds die and fall
Fall right out of the sky
It’s just the way it is
And nobody knows why
The sidewalks are cracking
There’s potholes in the road
It’s how it’s always been
And how it always goes

[Chorus]
So I ain’t done nothin’ to hide my age
Since that fake ID
No whitenin strips, hair pieces
Or just for men for me
I’m here slowly agin
Like it’s meant to be
Gettin old and
Agin’ naturally

My knees don’t work the same way
As when I was a kid
My shoulders don’t work quite right
But then again they never did
Eventually I’ll lose my hair
But I’m cool with that
Cause I guess I always thought
That I look good in hats

[Repeat Chorus]

[SOLO]

[Repeat Chorus]

Comes Around
By Chad Shank

I’ve been thinking bout grandpa
When I was five years old
He had this flannel jacket
Never wore a bigger coat

I’d hold on to his sleeves
And he walked me to the park
We’d meet his friends for coffee
And then we’d stroll around and look at cars

I was 24 when he passed on
Now 20 years have gone
There’s so many things I want to tell him
When my time Comes Around

Comes Around
Comes Around
Once my time Comes Around
Comes Around
Comes Around
Once my time Comes Around

He was guide and my teacher
He was my one true keeper
I was his only grandson
He was so proud of me

When it’s my time
I’m gonna tell him
All the things I’ve been holding inside
When I get there
I’m gonna tell him
How much he’s been by my side

End This Drift (Taylor Swift)
I called to tell you something
It was so important to me
In seconds it was all about you
What you know, what I’m too dumb to see

I’m not the first to be neglected
By one who just can’t see the trees
Writers have used this for ages
Their lyrics break our hearts and bend our knees

Chorus
So, if Taylor was going to sing-along
With my song about this love gone wrong
Would it help to make the end come Swift
Would her voice be the backup
That would end this drift
End this drift
End this drift
Taylor Swift
Help me, End this drift
End this drift
End this drift
Taylor Swift
Help me, End this drift

I’m not here to be your mirror
Or here to make you feel alive
If you can’t see beyond yourself
I won’t be part of your selfish life

I’m the OK Boomer
Hello all you Gen Zs and millennials
I understand you have a problem with me
For warming up the atmosphere and poisoning the sea
And grabbing all the best fruit off the tree

Chorus:
I’m the OK Boomer
Born right after WWII
Yeah I’m the OK Boomer
I got mine what’s left is for you

I told you you could be what you want to be
Now you found out surprise life don’t work that way
You say they don’t appreciate you enough at your job
For everything you do you expect to be praised

I paid for college doing part-time work
That was something we all did in those years
I let education costs go berserk, sorry ‘bout that
Now you’re in student debt up to your ears

[Repeat Chorus]

I invested wisely in stocks and bonds
If you are broke you have yourself to blame
I am retired you’ll keep working until your dead
Quit buying tattoos and video games

I grabbed all the cookies now don’t be bitter
‘Cause I’m leaving you the crumbs from the bag
You can complain to all your friends on something called Twitter
Use my name after the pound sign you call a hashtag

[Repeat Chorus]

It’s Not Gonna Take Me Down (Don’t Let Me Drown)

Bad news knockin’ at my door again
Headlines feeling like a ball and chain
People tradin’ hate for political gain
Hey you, do you feel the pain?
My pain
Do you feel my pain?
My pain

Chorus:
But it’s not gonna take me down
I know there’s kindness hiding in this town
If you see my hand reaching out
Please don’t let me drown

So much reality pressing in
People hurting, hearts flickering
I keep on moving, keep on breathing in
Please Lord forgive our sins
Our sins
Forgive our sins
Again and again

[Repeat Chorus]

Talking heads bickering
Cell phones flickering
SOS hanging in the air
Somewhere somebody cares
Somebody cares
Somebody cares

[Repeat Chorus]

Don’t let me drown
I see your kindness and you’re reaching out
Come save me now
You can save me now
Come save me now

Cabin in the Glades

Where the pavement ends and the cattails start
Where it’s not quite light and it’s not quite dark
And Spanish moss hangs down like witches hair
Where gators glide like wicked thoughts
And your last hope is all you got
Sometimes late at night you’ll find me there

Lonely and lost, I fret and cry
And wonder what it’s like to die
I’m twisted up inside like mangrove trees

But then I see, I realize
Something’s rising up before my eyes

There’s a cabin in the swamp
Where pythons squeeze and gators chomp
It’s waiting there for you when all else fades
Come on in, the door’s ajar
You might just find out who you are
You might find your mind in the cabin in the Glades

I go inside, the room is bare
Four plain walls and a wooden chair
So I decide to sit and take my rest
Again my brain gets swept away
With dreams and schemes and yesterday
Worry, greed, shame, and regret

I sat through storms, I sat through tears
Maybe days, might be years
But the fever in my mind wouldn’t break
I heard the wind sigh, “let it go”
But I’m always the last to know
Until I heard the night bird sing “awake”

I open my eyes, my sight is clear
Cabin and swamp both disappear
My soul feels new and clean as morning rain
And I see the world more straight and true
Might not be heaven but it’ll do
Sure am glad to be back home again

So if you’re down and lost your mind
You want to leave this world behind
When you decide to quit this masquerade

Remember that cabin and the wooden chair
Come on down, I might be there
Back in the shack in the everloving Everglades
You might find your mind in the cabin in the Glades

Jack of All Tirades
(words & music by Steve Wolff – January 2022)

If you could see yourself from here, I don’t think you’d like the angle.
If you could hear the words you say. The syntax you mangle.
Your reasoning is circular. Your tolerance is square.
All the lights are blazing but nobody’s living there.
All bluster and bully. Don’t see grey or all its shades
Only black and white. You’re a Jack of all tirades.

Jack of all, Master of none. A billowing blast of air.
One of us should really speak up. But none of us really care.
The sound that makes you smile comes from inside your own head.
You’re stunningly verbose for one so shockingly unread.
Please go on some more, while I go find the door.
Perhaps no one will notice that I’m gone.

Chorus:
Just ignore that noisy gong, ‘till the hollow bellow fades.
Move aside my friends for the Jack of all tirades.

You’ve overstayed your welcome. Now you’re welcome to be gone.
Pardon me for saying, you’re just not catching on.
You’ve gone and lost what little shine you may have had before.
Consider yourself welcome to show yourself the door.
We’ll do our best to miss you, but no promises are made.
Still, you’ll always be the Jack of all tirades.

13 Tattoos
Paul Nye © 2022 nyesguyTunes Publishing/BMI

She was a high school queen in a podunk town near Memphis
The Belle of the Ball of every teenage boy’s fantasy
Owned her little world of good looks and style
But when high school ended, so did her vanity
Tangled in a web of her dreams and reality

Now she’s waiting tables at the Diner of Regrets
And every tip she makes is spent on a broken heart
Holding tightly to her dream, as the years fade away
(She’s) One table away from romance and a brand new start
While waiting for love tears her apart

Chorus:
Thirteen tattoos; a portrait of a haunting memory
And a bowl of bad luck tomorrows that never came
Thirteen tattoos – a picture of a regrettable tragedy
Of a life steeped in sorrow and pain
Where only her mem’ries remain

Her flannel shirt hides the ink-stained image on her arm
Of a knight in shining armor without a name
Not a hero or defender, but a thief of broken hearts
She thought he’d rescue her from a long road of shame
But she only has herself to blame

Gets in her car, wheels screech as the pedal hits the floor
Trying to break from a life out of control
Never saw the sign warning her, “Sharp Turn Ahead”
But it wasn’t the curve that took her soul
She lost the dream she’d longed for years ago

Chorus:
Thirteen tattoos; a portrait of a haunting memory
And a bowl of bad luck tomorrows that never came
Thirteen tattoos – a picture of a regrettable tragedy
Of a life steeped in sorrow and pain
Where only her mem’ries remain

End Chorus:
Thirteen tattoos; a portrait of a broken melody
Of a life steeped in sorrow and pain
Where only mem’ries remain

That Friend of Mine

Verse 1:
All the earth has turned to concrete
Summertime has now moved on
Hollow lies and distant visions
There’s nothing left except a song
I fear the subways and old thrift stores
Cause they often chill my spine
I can’t get over how they moved me
Took that friend of mine

Chorus:
Feelings can’t be automadin’
They can’t be won at a church bake sales
And it took me a lifetime
To get that friend of mine
I hope one day our friendship prevails

Interlude: Instrumental with key transition

Chorus

Verse 2:
Shattered dreams and muddy gutters
Shield my eyes from what they see
Never seem to change for me
I loathe the past reminders
Cause they often chill my spine
I can’t get over how they moved me
Lost that friend of mine

Chorus:

Tag line:
I hope one day our friendship prevails

When I Was Twenty-Two

In the morning I can hardly move my head
It takes forever just to get out of bed
My knee pops when I try to walk
My voice croaks when I try to talk
I want to go back to sleep instead
Back to…back to-hoo-hoo

CHORUS
Back to when I was Twenty-Two
Back when there wasn’t anything I couldn’t do
Back then I concentrated endlessly
On anything that captured me
I stayed up late whenever I wanted to-hoo-hoo-hoo
Back when I was Twenty-Two

Each morning I have cereal to eat
No sugar because I don’t do well with sweets
I hardly get up to greet the dawn
Before my energy’s all up and gone
A turning back of time is what I need
Back to…back to-hoo-hoo

CHORUS

Next Time ©2022 Doug Millaway

All those ideas are captured at last
Thoughts are like wind in the sail
The canvas is set high on the mast
No way my memories will fail

Next time – I won’t let you go
Next time – I’ll let my feelings show
Next time – I’ll learn from my mistake
Cause I need you in my life every day

These are the lies
These are the tales I tell myself
And I can fool my mind, and ignore all the signs
better than anybody else
better than anybody else

From stern to bow we reach for safety
The storm of emotion should end
I recall that day’s conversation vaguely
So many messages to send

Next time – I won’t let you go
Next time – I’ll let my feelings show
Next time – I’ll learn from my mistake
But I need you in my life every day

These are the lies
These are the tales I tell myself
I can fool my mind, and ignore all the signs
better than anybody else
These are the lies
These are the tales I tell myself
I can fool my mind, and ignore all the signs
better than anybody else
better than anybody else
I said better than anybody else
