They Always Do

It sounded like that tired old cliché
When she told me it’s not you it’s me
Said now sees herself in a fresh new way
If I loved her I should want to see her free
I guess I should have seen the signs
Instead it took me by surprise
Felt a chill rise slowly up my spine
As I saw the distant look in her eyes
Chorus:
I’m the same me that I always was before
So many years together I thought there would be more
They say women think that men will change but it’s never true
Men think women will never change but they always do
I think back to the time when we were twenty
And our first kiss at the top of the Ferris Wheel
Now half our double bed is empty
When I reach out in the night I know it’s real
This bedroom feels smaller by the minute
I swear the wall are slowly closing in
Don’t feel like home without her in it
Starting over but how do I begin
[Repeat chorus]
Bridge:
Looked for refuge in a bottle
To help get me through each day
Now I know that’s not the answer
Letting go is hard but there’s no choice
I guess it has to be this way
[Repeat chorus]
