By Dan Barnes – v2.1 25 Mar 2025
VERSE 1
I been here and there and then some
You are so new at this
Tell me what your heart says
Say what this is
CHORUS
You don’t need to go the extra mile
Like you think you oughta do
Don’t go on and on and on like always
Like you’re happy and we ain’t through
No need to go to town insisting
We ain’t burned through what we brung
No need to go to town insisting
Forty ain’t old and twenty-one ain’t young
No no no no no
Baby go
VERSE 2
But it's always gonna mean something
What we do, now and here
Kiss me once for always
One kiss one tear
CHORUS
You don’t need to go the extra mile
Like you think you oughta do
Don’t go on and on and on like always
Like you’re happy and we ain’t through
No need to go to town insisting
We ain’t burned through what we brung
No need to go to town insisting
Forty ain’t old and twenty-one ain’t young
No no no no no
Baby go
BRIDGE
Go live up your twenties
Go laugh long and deep
Go love up your life
Till there's a love
You'd die to keep
CHORUS
Then oh baby go the extra mile
Like you know you oughta do
Go right on and on and on about always
Be happy and never be through
Just don’t forget me insisting
We ain't wrong to be done
Don’t forget me insisting
You go and be young
No no no no no
Baby go
No no no no no
Baby go
This is a breakup song at the end of a relationship between two adults of very different ages. For drama's sake, I chose an extreme age spread, making them 21 and 40. The song's had two peer reviews, MAS and NSAI. Judging by those reviews, the story isn't clear enough. Verse one is vague and needs a rewrite. But maybe the whole scenario is just too odd? And the age difference could be icky. Is the concept too flawed to be worth further work?
I wrote the lyric, melody and chord chart. The vocal here is mine. The backing track was generated by pre-AI features of the Hookpad web app at hooktheory.com using instruments and styles that I chose and a mix that I controlled.
