Go Back – 2025
Terry Kennedy-Lares
You want to go back to when times were good,
black people stayed in their neighborhoods,
You want to go back to what you called home,
before you grew up and moved out on your own
Pre-chorus
You can’t go back, it doesn’t work that way,
it doesn’t matter how much you pray,
Dreams of the past just cloud your mind,
and keep you from living in the present time.
Chorus
You can’t go back, no you can’t go back,
Time rolls like a train down a railroad track,
You can’t go back, no, you can’t go back home.
Bridge
People will say how good it was, years ago it wasn’t you vs us,
workers earned a decent wage, what we didn’t know contained our rage,
They seem to forget the Korean War, Businesses were taxed much more,
Unions striking to get better pay, Polio deaths across the USA,
Black people lynched by the KKK, you had to hide if you were gay,
Chorus
We gotta move ahead to make times good,
black and white friends in our neighborhood,
We gotta come together to move ahead,
We gotta love each other like the good book said.
Pre-Chorus and Chorus
Improvization on outro.
