BEFORE I MET YOU
By Paul Nye
I feel more now like I did than when I first met you
And you look more like you do when my dreams came true
Love is an excuse people chose to ignore
Before they see the truth in the one they adore
CHORUS:
Before I met you – I looked for you everywhere
But, I could not find you anywhere
Now I don’t wonder why it took so long to fall in love
When you were the one I was dreaming of
Before I met you
That day you saw me playing on a stage
Told your friend “I’m gonna marry that guy someday”
Was a year later we met and fell in love
You and I were the one – we always dreamed of
CHORUS:
Before I met you – I looked for you everywhere
But, I could not find you anywhere
Now I don’t wonder why it took so long to fall in love
When you were the one I was dreaming of
BRIDGE:
I thought you were perfect—turns out, you thought that too.
We both fell for someone that neither of us really knew.
CHORUS (2x):
Before I met you – I looked for you everywhere
But, I could not find you anywhere
Now I don’t wonder why it took so long to fall in love
When you were the one I was dreaming of
Before I met you
A little background on a philosophical love song, front loaded with crap about dreams. “Before I Met You” is a reflective song about how we often fall in love with an idealized version of someone—before truly knowing who they are. It explores how love begins with dreams, expectations, and appearances, but deepens over time through discovery, change, and maturity. The bridge acknowledges the humor and humility in realizing that both people in a relationship are constantly growing—and that lasting love comes not from perfection, but from understanding. (BTW: The 2nd verse is a true story)
