Lyrics:

DON’T MARRY A GIRL YOU MEET IN A BAR
By Paul Nye

VERSE 1:
She was so good-lookin’, and I was pretty drunk
I could tell she was more than I deserved, more than I ever thunk
She grabbed my arm and dragged me, out on that dance floor
We raised our glasses, had a party that night, and did so much more

PRE-CHORUS:
Then I remember what mama once said…

CHORUS:
Be careful how you pick your friends, be careful what you say
Cuz what you hear in a dark honky tonk could be different the next day
Be careful who you bring home, don’t let her drive your car
And mama said her best advice of all was…Don’t marry a girl that you meet in a bar

VERSE 2:
My mama was a good looker, she liked 2-steppin’ country songs
Daddy liked her style & they hooked up; soon I came along
But momma liked to dance and drink, and her and daddy would aways fight
Wasn’t too long & my daddy moved on; mama learned a lesson that night

CHORUS:
Be careful how you pick your friends, be careful what you say
What you hear in a dark honky tonk could be different the next day
Be careful who you bring home, don’t let her drive your car
And mama said her best advice of all was…Don’t marry a girl that you meet in a bar

BRIDGE:
Mama saw daddy at a small town bar, she was lookin’ for the man of her dreams
It all happened so fast & that marriage didn’t last, a bad fairytale, it seems

VERSE 3:
Now it’s been 20 years of marriage, two kids, a home and a dog
We worked hard through the good & bad; together is where we belong
Mama was wise, but wrong this time, cuz I’m so in love with my wife
She and me, our dog and family is where I wanna live my life

END CHORUS:
Be careful how you pick your friends, but be a good one everyday
Cuz your mama has her own ideas, and you think in a different way
We all need each other in this ol’ world, you’re right where you belong
Go out a make a friend, and marry whoever you want
Yeah, get out make a new friend today, and marry whoever you want

Written in response after SongTown review session listening to country-song-after-country-song all with the same theme: "drinking, picking up chicks in bars, one-night-stands, pickup trucks," blah, blah, blah.
