WHERE YOU ARE
By Paul Nye
VERSE 1:
I keep picking at this scab of emotion
And I know it’ll leave a scar
But that scar will be a living reminder
Of who I am, and where you are
PRE-CHORUS:
This bed is cold without you
‘Cause it’s not where you are
CHORUS:
I miss that warm empty spot where your body once lay
I still hold you in my heart
We were so close, Heaven’s not that far
But I take comfort knowing there you are
Yeah, I take comfort knowing where you are
VERSE 2:
We built a good life together
Two kids, scattered toys across the floor
Yeah, the best thing about us wasn’t what we owned
Your love made it feel like more
PRE-CHORUS:
This bed is cold without you
‘Cause it’s not where you are
CHORUS:
I miss that warm empty spot where your body once lay
I still hold you in my heart
We were so close, and Heaven’s not that far
But, I take comfort knowing there you are
Yeah, I take comfort knowing where you are
BRIDGE:
My tears soak the ground on this grassy field
Of names and dates etched in stone
Somewhere beyond this field of grief
We’ll never be alone
Still I’d love to walk you halfway home
END CHORUS:
I miss that warm empty spot where your body once lay
I will always hold you in my heart
We were so close, Heaven’s not so far
But I take comfort in knowing there you are
I miss that warm empty spot where your body once lay
I will always hold you in my heart
We were close, Heaven’s not so far
But I take comfort in knowing there you are
Yeah, I take comfort in knowing where you are
There you are….

A song about grief and loss. I was thinking about how grief doesn’t always come in big waves – it comes in those quiet moments after losing someone, when it’s not the big things that hit you—it’s the small, everyday ones. The empty side of the bed, the life you built together, the memories that don’t quite fade. It’s a song about missing someone deeply, but also holding onto the comfort that they’re still close in a different way.
PRODUCTION NOTES: I also have a stripped down acoustic version of the song. I like this one better. The outro has its own metaphor to fit the lyrical content. For some, it might not be evident. That said, it can easily be edited out due to the length of the song.
