[VERSE ONE]
We used to celebrate together
One day apart, but side by side
Same candles, hours of laughter
Always you and I
Now I’m sitting here in silence
I don’t know what to do
I just want you
[PRE-CHORUS]
I look for little signs
In the places you used to be
[CHORUS]
Flutter by, Butterfly
If you’re in the way the air feels changed
Stay here by my side
[VERSE TWO]
I know angels don’t get older
But I still count the years
Still saying “happy birthday.”
Through a throat full of tears
I still talk to you sometimes
Like I always used to do
’Cause I wasn’t ready to say goodbye
And I still need you
[PRE-CHORUS]
I look for little signs
Anything to cue a memory
[CHORUS]
Flutter by, Butterfly
If you’re right here and I can’t explain it
Stay here by my side
[BRIDGE]
If you’re in the breeze that’s blowing
If you’re in the petals falling
If you’re in the stars up in the sky
Wherever you are in Heaven
Flutter by, butterfly
Send me back your sunshine
[FINAL CHORUS]
Flutter by, Butterfly
I still whisper your name
If you’re somewhere close tonight
If you wouldn’t mind
Stay here by my side
[OUTRO]
One day apart – I still feel it
Every year – I still whisper your sweet name
Flutter by, butterfly – I still miss, still love you
That will never change
For a little context behind this one:
– My grandma and I were extremely close. We celebrated our birthdays together every year, and she loved (and collected) anything with butterflies.
– “You Are My Sunshine” was the first song she taught me to play on the piano when I was little, and it was always something special between us.
– When my daughter was little, she couldn’t say “butterfly,” so she called them “flutterbies.”
– “Flutter by, Butterfly” is the name of the poem I wrote for my grandma’s funeral.
– Whenever we see a monarch butterfly, we like to think it’s her visiting us.
