Lyrics:

What I Missed
By Paul Nye nyesguyTunes Publ/BMI (Jason Mraz vibe)
VERSE 1:
I used to think Jesus was a homeless drifter, wore dirty clothes
He loved and hung around people religious leaders loathed
Probably had bad breath, maybe body odor
Didn’t have a place, musta been a freeloader

PRE-CHORUS:
I didn’t believe because it made no sense – never considered the evidence

CHORUS:
Nothing from nothing was what I believed
That was my narrow philosophy
There were things in life that I accepted by faith
‘Cept for that One who tooka my place
Faith in God I easily dismissed
But now I see what I missed , oh-oh, what did I miss?

VERSE 2:
A big threat to the gov’rnment when he said he was a king
They didn’t know what he meant, and that was not a good thing
He caused a big stir with what he did and said
Like healing the sick & blind, & raising the dead

PRE-CHORUS:

Yeah, I was a big resist-ah, Now I wonder what I missed-ah

CHORUS:
Nothing from nothing was what I believed
That was my narrow philosophy
There were things in life that I accepted by faith
‘Cept for that One who tooka my place
Faith in God I easily dismissed
But now I see what I missed , oh-oh, what I missed?

BRIDGE:
Absolute truth was not in my worldview
And I believed that was absolutely true
But I had a lot of faith in things I could not see
Like history, wind & air, & gravity

CHORUS:
Nothing from nothing was what I believed
That was my narrow philosophy
There were things in life that I accepted by faith
‘Cept for that One who tooka my place
Faith in God I easily dismissed
Now I can see what I missed , oh-oh, what did I miss?

Comments by composer(s):

My feeble attempt at channeling Jason Mraz musically, but mostly lyrically. Don't recall if I've submitted this for a review in the past. Main issue is the song borders on thoughtful/intellectual/philosophical POV with novelty language thrown in. I wonder if that cheapens the song, or if I should stick with less "slang" language. Also, a few lines in the verses "tell" more than "show." I would like to know which lines I should focus on. Finally, I understand that the language in the first verse can turn some listeners off. I wanted to be blunt with how I used to see Jesus – or how many unbelievers might see Jesus, but I wonder if it's too blunt. I worked hard at not being preachy in this song. Hopefully, that came across.
