Ragged Mess ©2020 Doug Millaway
You couldn't tell her anything she didn't already know
There were things she never wanted said out loud
The fog around a worried mind kept all her secrets in
Trust no one, keep your enemy around
What once was clear is now just a haze
One bad call takes its toll
The truth and the lies all come together
This ragged mess used to be a soul
The captain made a bad call down by the channel that night
Now the whole damn town is living with it still
The fog out on the water keeps the truth just out of sight
Nobody talks about it, but we will
What once was clear is now just a haze
One bad call takes its toll
The truth and the lies all come together
This ragged mess used to be a soul
The fog rolls in every evening like it's trying to help us forget
But the truth waits out on the water and it ain't done with you yet
You can hide it for a while, you can try to just move on,
but the tide comes in every morning like it knows what you've done
What once was clear is now just a haze
One bad call takes its toll
The truth and the lies all come together
This ragged mess used to be a soul
In a town like this, nothing really disappears
I've had this song in my "to do" list since the pandemic. I think the lyrics set a strong mood, but the story may be too cryptic. Looking for possible fixes.
