Lyrics:

You Told Me So
(Samantha Casper 2026)

[VERSE ONE]
I picked another fight over nothing
Blew things way out of proportion
Yeah, I ruined another good day
That's what you would always say

Been so long walking on eggshells
I still feel them underneath
Now I say sorry just to say it
Before I even speak

[PRE-CHORUS]
Every tear was attention-seeking
Every fear was an overreaction

[CHORUS]
You wanna know how I know?
’Cause you told me so

[VERSE TWO]
I replay every conversation
Second-guess my every word
I hear your voice before my own
Like it's the only truth I've heard

Every mistake makes me want to hide
Every doubt still wears your face
And I hate how much I need to hear
You were wrong in the first place

[PRE-CHORUS]
Every question was proof of guilt
Every boundary was a reason for shame
And after hearing it long enough, I started thinking the same

[CHORUS]
You want to know how I know?
'Cause you told me so

[BRIDGE]
I can't get your voice out of my head
It's louder than the truth instead
And I hate that part of me
Still believes it's all on me
You don't have to hurt me now
I do it to myself somehow

[FINAL CHORUS]
You want to know how I know?
'Cause you told me so

Told me I ruin everything
Make a mountain out of anything
Now every little thing that goes wrong
I hear your judgments all day long
You want to know why I hate myself?
Why I wish I could be anybody else?
'Cause you said nobody would ever want me
That's what I learned to believe

Said I was – too much
Not enough
Too sensitive
Too hard to love

Now every mirror echoes back
Every lie dressed up as fact
You want to know why I feel this low?
'Cause you told me so

And even though you’re long gone now
I still can’t shut you out
Some lies leave scars that won't let go – I know
'Cause you told me so

Comments by composer(s):

I know it needs a lot of work. I meant for it to somehow show the build up and unraveling that happens when someone spends their entire life being talked down to. This is actually the dialed back version. I only recorded/uploaded the verses, 2-lined chorus/hook, and the bridge… I wasn't sure what to expect for the final bit of of.
